West Sumba's coastline faces the open Indian Ocean directly, which means it picks up swell nearly year-round. The dry season usually runs from April through October and brings the most consistent conditions: clean faces, offshore winds in the mornings, and groundswells that stack up properly on the reef. But even outside peak season, our semi-private resort in Sumba still stays active in the water.

Weather and season dependant, a couple of breaks are accessible directly from Dassang beach, where our villas perch, without a boat or a ride. Here are a few of them, their names subject to future changes without prior notice (consult with our Reservation or Front Office team to confirm all surf break updates available at our resort):

Cocos breaks right in front of the beachfront restaurant: a fun left and right-hander off the reef edge that works best on low to mid tide. An occasional right-hander forms further down when the sandbanks shift.

Sunset Left is advised only for experienced surfers. A heavy, powerful left-hander that delivers a serious workout in serious surf; it’s not a wave to underestimate.

Rope Burns runs along the cliffs at the end of the beach. A right-hander best on mid tide and bigger swells, inconsistent but rewarding for surfers who know what they are doing.

Pinnacles rewards the early risers. A fun right-hander that fires best on mid tide in the morning before the wind goes onshore, with barrel sections on lower tide conditions that make it worth the early alarm.

Kerewe is perhaps the standout. A multi-section right-hander that can run up to 700 metres on its day, with different parts of the reef suiting different ability levels.
