It has its natural display formed by flowing layers of water and terrains. Another must-visit is the Matayangu Waterfall, which is surrounded by deep-rooted ancient trees, with its azure pool at the base inviting guests for a refreshing plunge. Next on the list is Waikelo Sawa, which is known for its blue waters and unique rock formations.
- Waikelo Sawa

Tucked among verdant rice paddy terraces, Waikelo Sawa is a little spot that would inspire guests with its vibrant colours and stunning landscape. A short stroll on these terraces leads you to an ancient tree, its natural focal point. Carefully maintained by the locals, Waikelo Sawa welcomes visitors to experience Sumba in its authenticity, as offered by The Sanubari Resort.

Nestled in a national park, Matayangu Waterfall is a hidden treasure that offers a rejuvenating experience to explorers. Set among large banyan trees and Jurassic-like vegetation, this waterfall is a breathtaking sight. Embark on a hike through the lush forest and be rewarded with stunning views of Matayangu, where you can swim in the freshwater pool and truly connect with nature. Guided tours to Matayangu are provided by our resort in Sumba to ensure a seamless and enriching experience for you.
- Lapopu Waterfall

Lapopu Waterfall is another one of Sumba's enchanting natural pools, inviting visitors to a peaceful swim and moments of tranquility. Nestled within a small canyon surrounded by rocks, the waters from Matayangu flow into Lapopu, creating a serene oasis. The Sanubari Resort offers tours to Lapopu, perfect for those seeking a quiet encounter with nature away from the world. Whether you choose to sunbathe or simply appreciate the view, Lapopu promises a memorable experience that showcases the island's natural beauty and the charm of our resort in the island of Sumba.
Captivating Beaches of Sumba Island
The island of Sumba is rich with beautiful beaches. To name a few are the Dassang Beach, Marosi Beach, Watubella Beach, and the Weekuri Lagoon. With huge rock formations and untouched white-sand and black sand beaches, Sumba offers a remarkable mix of hardy cliffs and soft sandy shoreline, like in Watubella. Another beach, Marosi Beach, draws surfers from across the globe and offers an escapade for those looking for seclusion among the unspoiled beauty of Sumba’s nature. Another famous site on the island, the Weekuri Lagoon, also has its own appeal with its distinctive saltwater pools surrounded by greenery.
- Dassang Beach

The Sanubari Resort is located at Dassang Beach, which is filled with pristine white sands and surrounded by glistening, crystal blue waters. Guests can enjoy semi-private beach access and a variety of island activities including morning walks, surfing, swimming with horses, and dining at our beachfront dining site. Dassang is also a great place to have a romantic sunset dinner, with our restaurant and bar located only a few steps away from your villa.
- Weekuri Lagoon

A famous tourist site in Sumba, Weekuri Lagoon is a breathtaking saltwater basin surrounded by lush vegetation. We recommend guests to avoid this crowded area on weekends if you're looking for a quiet getaway, since the crowd of locals and tourists could take away the serenity many guests search for.
- Watubella Beach

Only a short motorbike ride from our resort, Watubella is a secluded beach site framed by dramatic rock formations. With caves and hidden nooks waiting to be explored, this beach is perfect for those seeking to further explore the island. The Sanubari offers guided trips to Watubella, and guests can discover this beach at their own pace. Its beauty and serene atmosphere make this site a must-visit beach spot for those visiting Sumba.
- Marosi Beach

Located close to Dassang Beach, and also a part of The Sanubari’s reserve is the Marosi Beach. Guests may enjoy snorkeling, horseback riding on the beach, or surfing, all while being surrounded by pure white sands and vivid blue waters. Marosi’s beauty is preserved for guests seeking immersive, peaceful experiences, making it a perfect escape to unwind and reconnect with nature.
- Kerewe Beach

Kerewe Beach, with its distinctive black sand, is located less than a 10-minute scooter ride from The Sanubari Resort, making it a convenient site to explore just a little outside the resort. Easily detected from the main road, Kerewe is a surfer’s paradise, famous for its waves. The beach is renowned for its impressive swells that attract surfers from around the world.
- Tarakaha Beach

Tarakaha is one of the less visited gems in West Sumba, mainly due to its hidden location and slightly harder access point. It consists of two beaches that are connected on a low tide and surrounded by cliffs and rolling hills with tropical vegetation. Nestled between Watubella and Kerewe, these beaches are rarely occupied and well worth the visit.
- Mata Dewa Beach

Dewa beach is on the other side of the cliff from Watubella, creating a magical walk around the headland on low tide. Small private beaches can be enjoyed on the lower tide, while snorkelling can be good on high tides. Looking out of the magical white rocks, Mata Dewa or Dewa is less known by tourists and locals alike. There's a small track that takes up and over the heading to Watubella or to enjoy a sunset from the headland.
